LPS 1175 E10 (SR5) Rating Explained

LPS 1175 E10 (SR5) Security Rating: Certified Curtain Walling and Gates

LPS 1175 E10, the Issue 8 rating commonly compared with SR5, certifies that a complete product has resisted a sophisticated, well-resourced attacker using high-end 36V cordless tools for at least ten minutes. It is widely specified for critical national infrastructure, government buildings, military sites and high-security embassies, and it sits at the top of Premier Security's certified range. Premier Security Ballistic & Blast Ltd manufactures E10 certified Ultimate High Security Curtain Walling 5 and Kraken 5 automatic sliding gates, both listed on LPCB Red Book Live.

What Does LPS 1175 E10 Mean?

LPS 1175 is the Loss Prevention Standard for intruder resistant building components, published by the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB), part of BRE Global. Every Issue 8 rating has two parts: the letter sets the tools the attacker can use, and the number sets the minimum delay in minutes the product must achieve.

At E10, the test team attacks the locked product with Category E tools and must not create a 400 mm x 225 mm opening, the minimum size a person can climb through, within ten minutes of working time. Any part of the assembly can be targeted, including frames, glazing, infill panels, locks, fixings and the gate or facade structure itself.

The Category E tool set

Category E represents a sophisticated attacker with the most powerful battery tools commercially available, prepared to make noise and work through a sustained attack. The kit includes everything in Categories A to D plus:

  • Categories A to D: hand tools, bolt cutters, an axe, a crowbar, a gas torch, sledgehammers and 18V cordless disc grinders, reciprocating saws, jigsaws and circular saws
  • Added at Category E: 36V cordless tools, 750W reciprocating saws and high-power circular saws

The step from D10 to E10 keeps the same ten-minute delay but raises the power of the cutting tools. Higher-voltage saws and grinders cut faster and deeper, so an E10 product has to resist a much more aggressive cutting attack for the full ten minutes.

E10 vs SR5: Issue 8 and Issue 7 Explained

LPS 1175 Issue 8 came into effect in 2019 and was the most substantial revision of the standard to date. It replaced the single SR1 to SR8 scale with a tool category letter (A to H) followed by a minimum delay in minutes (1, 3, 5, 10, 15 or 20). E10 is the Issue 8 classification commonly compared with the old SR5.

Under Issue 7, the tool set behind SR5 was an enhanced Category D kit, often written as D+. Issue 8 made it a category in its own right, Category E, which is why the SR5 equivalent carries a new letter rather than a longer delay. All of Premier Security's E10 products are certified under Issue 8, so their certificates show E10 and the products can be described as E10 (SR5).

Issue 7: Security Rating 5

  • Single number scale, SR1 to SR8
  • Enhanced Category D (D+) tool set, minimum 10 minutes
  • Still found in older specifications and on products whose Issue 7 certificates are maintained

Issue 8: E10

  • Tool category letter plus delay in minutes, A1 to H20
  • Category E attack, minimum 10 minutes
  • Often written as E10 (SR5) for comparison
  • Premier products: Ultimate High Security Curtain Walling 5 and Kraken 5 automatic sliding gates

Check the letter and the number: Issue 8 allows Category E tools to be tested to different delays, so E5 and E15 also exist alongside E10. An E5 product resists for half the time of an E10 product. Always check both parts of the rating on the certificate.

Specifier note: where a specification calls for LPS 1175 SR5, Issue 8 E10 is the current classification for that threat level. If the wording insists on Issue 7 specifically, confirm with the specifier that an E10 product is acceptable before ordering.

Premier Security's E10 Certified Products

Premier Security holds LPCB certification for the following products at E10. Openings outside the certified scope are not covered by the rating, so our technical team will confirm the certified configuration for every opening.

Ultimate High Security Curtain Walling 51097w/01Glazed curtain walling, achieving its rating from either the external or the internal faceConfirmed per project by our technical team against the certificate

Ultimate High Security Curtain Walling 5 is the top of a family that runs from C5 (SR3) through D10 (SR4) to E10 (SR5). Panels are glazed only, and structural design of the facade sits outside LPS 1175. It is also the most comprehensively tested product in Premier Security's range, with ballistic, blast, vehicle impact and weather performance evidence alongside its E10 certificate (see below). See our security curtain walling.

Kraken 5 cantilever sliding gate1097x/01Automatic operation only0.5 m to 6.0 m high x 1.0 m to 12.0 m wide; minimum free-standing height 2.8 m

Kraken 5 is certified for automatic operation only, with a Surelock McGill electromechanical lock or IGEM maglock and BFT or AYROS gate motors. Gates below 2.8 m high must be installed within a four-sided structural opening, with a maximum ground gap of 90 mm, flat level ground and foundations offering equivalent attack resistance. Any access control must offer at least 100,000 effective codes, a higher threshold than the 30,000 required for the C5 and D10 Kraken gates. See our vehicle access sliding gates and security gates.

E10 and Combined Threat Protection

Sites that need E10 often face more than one threat. LPS 1175 covers forced entry only, so ballistic, blast and vehicle impact performance each need their own test evidence. The Ultimate High Security Curtain Walling family holds the following, each applying to the configuration tested:

The weather results come from a BRE test report rather than a certification. The family also achieves U-values as low as 0.5. For the full detail, see our Ballistic Resistance and Blast Resistance guides and the Hostile Vehicle Mitigation range.

Where E10 Is Specified

E10 suits sites where the credible threat is a sophisticated, well-resourced attacker, and where a breach would have serious consequences for national security, public safety or critical services. Typical applications include:

The right rating comes from a security risk assessment that weighs the asset value, the likely capability of an attacker and the time a response needs to arrive. In critical infrastructure and government contexts, that assessment is typically informed by NPSA (National Protective Security Authority) guidance. Our technical team can review the assessment and recommend a rating for each opening.

When D10 is enough

For data centre halls, utilities and high-value commercial sites where the threat is an experienced attacker with 18V power tools, D10 (SR4) is the common choice.

Read the D10 / SR4 rating guide

Beyond E10

Where an assessment points to mains-powered tools or a multi-person attack, ratings such as F10 (SR6) apply, and layered protection becomes important. Each certified layer, such as an E10 perimeter gate and an E10 facade, keeps its own rating; ratings do not add together, but every layer adds delay and a chance to detect the attack.

Discuss a layered approach with our team

Specifying an E10 Product: Checklist

  • Confirm the certificate shows E10 under Issue 8 (both the letter and the number) and check the listing on Red Book Live
  • Confirm the certified opening range for each elevation with our technical team before design freeze
  • Use only the locking systems listed on the certificate; other locks do not carry the rating
  • For Kraken 5 gates, specify automatic operation, allow for the 2.8 m minimum free-standing height and provide access control with at least 100,000 effective codes
  • Plan an uninterrupted power supply for automatic gates and maglocks if the rating must hold during a mains failure
  • Detail the fixings, foundations and substrate, as the connection to the structure sits outside the certificate
  • For curtain walling, design the structural performance separately, as it is outside the scope of LPS 1175
  • Where ballistic, blast or vehicle impact performance is also required, check that the evidence covers the exact configuration being specified
  • Remember that resistance of access control systems to non-mechanical attack is outside the scope of LPS 1175

Frequently Asked Questions: LPS 1175 E10 and SR5

Is LPS 1175 E10 the same as SR5?

E10 is the Issue 8 classification commonly compared with SR5: both describe a sophisticated attack held off for at least ten minutes. Under Issue 7 the SR5 tool set was an enhanced Category D kit, often written as D+, which Issue 8 turned into Category E. Premier Security's E10 products are certified under Issue 8 and are often described as E10 (SR5). If a specification insists on Issue 7 SR5, confirm with the specifier that an Issue 8 E10 product is acceptable.

What tools are used to test an E10 product?

The Category E tool set: everything in Categories A to D, including 18V cordless disc grinders and reciprocating saws, plus 36V cordless tools, 750W reciprocating saws and high-power circular saws. Testers attack the locked product and must not create a 400 mm x 225 mm opening within ten minutes of working time.

What is the difference between E10 and D10?

Both require a ten-minute delay, but E10 is tested with a more powerful tool set. D10 uses 18V cordless power tools, while E10 adds 36V tools, 750W reciprocating saws and high-power circular saws. E10 is the step up for sites facing a sophisticated, well-resourced attacker.

Which Premier Security products are certified to E10?

Ultimate High Security Curtain Walling 5 (certificate 1097w) and the Kraken 5 automatic cantilever sliding gate (certificate 1097x), both certified to LPS 1175 Issue 8 E10.

Can a curtain wall be E10 rated and vehicle impact tested?

Yes. Ultimate High Security Curtain Walling 5 is LPCB certified to E10, and the curtain walling family has been crash tested by HORIBA MIRA, a UKAS accredited laboratory, to ISO 22343-1:2023, stopping a 7.5 tonne truck at approximately 64 km/h with zero penetration. Each result applies to the configuration tested, so our team will confirm the specification that covers both.

Is there a manually operated E10 sliding gate?

The Kraken 5 gate is certified for automatic operation only. Manual operation is certified on the Kraken 2, 3 and 4 gates, up to D10 (SR4), so a manual sliding gate at E10 is not part of Premier Security's certified range.

What comes above E10?

Issue 8 continues with longer delays at Category E, such as E15 and E20, and with more powerful tool sets: F10 (SR6) introduces mains-powered tools and oxyacetylene cutting, and G10 (SR7) and H20 (SR8) go further still. Products at these levels are specialist and rare, so verify any claim directly against LPCB Red Book Live.
