Explore LPS 1175 ratings →LPS 1175 SR2, written as B3 under Issue 8 of the standard, is one of the most widely specified forced entry ratings for communal entrances, residential developments and low-risk commercial buildings. It certifies that a complete door, screen or gate has resisted a determined opportunist using Category B tools for at least three minutes. Premier Security Ballistic & Blast Ltd manufactures LPCB certified SR2 doorsets, screens and pedestrian gates, and B3 rated hinged and sliding vehicle gates, all listed on LPCB Red Book Live.
LPS 1175 is the Loss Prevention Standard for intruder resistant building components, published by the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB), part of BRE Global. Every rating describes two things: the tools the attacker is allowed to use and the minimum time the product must hold out against them.
At SR2 (B3), the test team attacks the locked product with Category B tools and must not create a 400 mm x 225 mm opening, the minimum size a person can climb through, within three minutes of working time. The attack can target any part of the assembly, including the leaf, frame, glazing, hinges, locks and threshold, so the whole product has to perform, not just the door leaf.
Category B represents a determined opportunist who is prepared to make some noise. The test kit includes everything in Category A plus tools with more mechanical advantage:
That profile reflects common attacks on communal and commercial entrances: forcing a door with leverage, cutting at a lock or hinge, or drilling out a cylinder. An SR2 product has been tested against those methods as a complete, locked assembly.
| Issue 7 | Issue 8 | Tool category | Minimum delay | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SR1 | A1 | A: concealed hand tools | 1 minute | Low-risk domestic, basic deterrent |
| SR2 | B3 | B: bolt cutters, claw hammer, cordless drill | 3 minutes | Communal entrances, residential blocks, low-risk commercial |
| SR3 | C5 | C: axe, crowbar, lump hammer, gas torch | 5 minutes | Commercial premises, schools, healthcare, retail |
LPS 1175 Issue 8 came into effect in 2019 and was the most substantial revision of the standard to date. It replaced the single SR1 to SR8 scale with a two-part classification: a tool category letter (A to H) followed by a minimum delay in minutes (1, 3, 5, 10, 15 or 20). That is why the same threat level appears as SR2 in older documents and B3 in newer ones.
Both ratings describe a Category B attacker held off for at least three minutes, which is why specifications often write "SR2 / B3" and treat them as comparable. The difference is the issue of the standard the product was tested under. A certificate states one or the other: an Issue 7 certificate shows Security Rating 2, and an Issue 8 certificate shows B3. A product certified under Issue 7 would need testing under Issue 8 to carry a B3 rating.
Specifier note: where a specification asks for "LPS 1175 SR2 or B3", products certified to either qualify. If a specification names Issue 8 B3 specifically, confirm with the specifier whether an Issue 7 Security Rating 2 product is acceptable before ordering. Premier Security lists every product with the rating and issue shown on its LPCB certificate, so there is no ambiguity in the submission.
Premier Security holds LPCB certification for the following products at SR2 or B3. Sizes are the certified structural openings shown on each certificate. Bespoke sizes outside these ranges are not covered by the rating, so our technical team will confirm the certified configuration for every opening.

Kraken 2 gates below 2.0 m high must be installed within a four-sided structural opening, with a maximum ground gap of 90 mm and foundations offering equivalent attack resistance. See our security gates and vehicle access sliding gates.
The Premier Fire Rated Fully Glazed doorset is certified to LPS 1175 Issue 7 Security Rating 2 (1097a/07) and to LPS 1056 for fire (1097f/01), classified EI 60 and E90 depending on the glazing build-up. It is a single leaf doorset, so one tested product meets both the security and the fire line of the schedule.
LPS 2081 is a separate LPCB standard for resistance to stealthy intrusion. Its Rating B is not an LPS 1175 rating and does not equate to SR2. Where both are required, Premier's companion range is certified to LPS 2081 Rating B: Industrial 81, Jansen 81, Jansen FR 81, Jansen Façade 81-Thermally Broken, SBD2-81 and SBD D-81 doorsets (1097c) and SBD G-81 gates (1097e).
SR2 suits buildings where the credible threat is a determined opportunist rather than a planned, well-equipped attack. Typical openings include:
SR2 is widely used on Secured by Design developments. The current Secured by Design guide for the development type, or the local Designing Out Crime Officer, sets the minimum standard for each opening, so check the requirement early in the design. Premier Security holds Secured by Design accreditation and can supply the documentation for planning submissions.
When to step up to SR3 (C5): if the risk assessment points to a planned attack with heavier tools such as an axe, crowbar or gas torch, or if the building holds higher-value assets, SR2 is unlikely to be enough. See the C5 (SR3) products on our LPS 1175 guide.
They describe the same threat level, a Category B attacker held off for at least three minutes, which is why B3 is often written as B3 (SR2). The difference is the issue of the standard: SR2 is Issue 7 notation and B3 is Issue 8. A product holds whichever rating is on its LPCB certificate. Most specifications accept either, but if yours names Issue 8 B3, check whether an Issue 7 SR2 product is acceptable.
Yes, for as long as LPCB maintains the certificate. LPCB certification is not a one-off test: the manufacturer's production is audited and products are re-tested through ongoing surveillance. A certificate that is still listed on Red Book Live is current, whichever issue it was tested under.
The Category B tool set: screwdrivers, pliers, knives, small spanners, fishing line and traction screws, plus bolt cutters, a claw hammer up to 1 kg, a cordless drill, steel tube and shears. Testers attack the locked product and must not create a 400 mm x 225 mm opening within three minutes of working time.
Under Issue 7 Security Rating 2: the Industrial 75, Jansen 75, Jansen FR 75, Jansen Façade 75-Thermally Broken, Premier Fire Rated Fully Glazed, SBD2 and SBD D-75 hinged doorsets, SBD2 modular security screens and SBD G-75 gates. Under Issue 8 B3: Kratos hinged gates and Kraken 2 cantilever sliding gates.
Yes, where the combination has been tested. The Premier Fire Rated Fully Glazed doorset holds LPS 1175 Security Rating 2 and LPS 1056 fire certification, classified EI 60 and E90 depending on the glazing build-up. Fire performance never follows automatically from a security rating, so always check that both certificates cover the doorset you are specifying.
No. LPS 2081 measures resistance to stealthy intrusion, while LPS 1175 measures resistance to forced entry. A Rating B under LPS 2081 is not an SR level, and one never implies the other. Some projects specify both, which is why Premier offers an LPS 2081 Rating B companion to its SR2 doorset range.
For most residential blocks it is the common choice, but the answer comes from the risk assessment and any Secured by Design or planning requirement on the project. Where the threat includes a planned attack with heavier tools, or the building holds higher-value assets, C5 (SR3) or above is more appropriate.
