LPS 1175 D10 (SR4) Rating Explained

LPS 1175 D10 (SR4) Security Rating: Certified Curtain Walling, Doorsets and Gates

LPS 1175 D10, the Issue 8 rating commonly compared with SR4, certifies that a complete product has resisted an experienced attacker with a professional cordless toolkit, including 18V disc grinders and reciprocating saws, for at least ten minutes. It is widely specified for data centres, utilities, high-value commercial sites and embassies. Premier Security Ballistic & Blast Ltd manufactures LPCB certified D10 curtain walling doorsets, screens and fixed windows, Ultimate High Security Curtain Walling 4 and Kraken 4 sliding gates, all listed on LPCB Red Book Live.

What Does LPS 1175 D10 Mean?

LPS 1175 is the Loss Prevention Standard for intruder resistant building components, published by the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB), part of BRE Global. Every Issue 8 rating has two parts: the letter sets the tools the attacker can use, and the number sets the minimum delay in minutes the product must achieve.

At D10, the test team attacks the locked product with Category D tools and must not create a 400 mm x 225 mm opening, the minimum size a person can climb through, within ten minutes of working time. Any part of the assembly can be targeted, including the leaf, frame, glazing, infill panels, hinges, locks and fixings.

The Category D tool set

Category D is the point where power tools enter the test. It represents an experienced criminal with a professional cordless toolkit, prepared to make noise and work for a sustained period. The kit includes everything in Categories A to C plus:

  • Categories A to C: hand tools, bolt cutters, a claw hammer, a cordless drill, an axe, a crowbar, a lump hammer, cold chisels and a gas torch
  • Added at Category D: 18V cordless disc grinders, reciprocating saws, jigsaws, circular saws and sledgehammers

Power tools change the nature of the attack. A cordless disc grinder or reciprocating saw can cut through steel sections, bolts and locks that hand tools would struggle with, so a D10 product has to resist cutting as well as leverage and impact, and do it for twice as long as a C5 product.

D10 vs SR4: Issue 8 and Issue 7 Explained

LPS 1175 Issue 8 came into effect in 2019 and was the most substantial revision of the standard to date. It replaced the single SR1 to SR8 scale with a tool category letter (A to H) followed by a minimum delay in minutes (1, 3, 5, 10, 15 or 20). D10 is the Issue 8 classification commonly compared with the old SR4: an experienced attack with Category D tools, held off for at least ten minutes.

All of Premier Security's D10 products are certified under Issue 8, so their certificates show D10 and the products can be described as D10 (SR4) for comparison with older specifications.

Issue 7: Security Rating 4

  • Single number scale, SR1 to SR8
  • Experienced attack, minimum 10 minutes
  • Still found in older specifications and on products whose Issue 7 certificates are maintained

Issue 8: D10

  • Tool category letter plus delay in minutes, A1 to H20
  • Category D attack, minimum 10 minutes
  • Often written as D10 (SR4) for comparison
  • Premier products: Jansen Façade D10 curtain walling range, Ultimate High Security Curtain Walling 4 and Kraken 4 sliding gates

Check the letter and the number: Issue 8 allows the same tool category to be tested to different delays. D5 products are on the market, and a D5 product resists Category D tools for five minutes, half the delay of D10. Always check both parts of the rating on the certificate.

Specifier note: where a specification calls for LPS 1175 SR4, Issue 8 D10 is the current classification for that threat level. If the wording insists on Issue 7 specifically, confirm with the specifier that a D10 product is acceptable before ordering.

Premier Security's D10 Certified Products

Premier Security holds LPCB certification for the following products at D10. Sizes are the certified structural openings shown on each certificate. Openings outside these ranges are not covered by the rating, so our technical team will confirm the certified configuration for every opening.

Jansen Façade D10 curtain walling range

Issue 8 D10 (SR4) | Certs 1097j, 1097k, 1097m
ProductLPCB refConfigurationsCertified structural opening
Jansen Façade D10 Curtain Walling Doorset1097j/01Hinged single or double leaf, outward opening only, side panel optionsSingle leaf up to 6.07 m high x 1.7 m wide; double leaf up to 3.06 m x 3.28 m; unlimited width with side panels
Jansen Façade D10 Curtain Walling Screen1097k/01Modular security screen. Can incorporate the D10 doorsetFrom 0.485 m, with no maximum height or width on the certificate
Jansen Façade D10 Curtain Walling Fixed Window1097m/01Single fixed light with glazed and/or opaque panels, in standard, thermally broken or fire rated profiles0.485 m to 3.0 m high x 0.485 m to 3.0 m wide

The D10 doorset is certified with IGEM 5000 maglocks (at least two on a single leaf and four on the active leaf of a double set), with a BKS shootbolt and flush bolts on the passive leaf. Leaves taller than 3 m need additional maglocks at no more than 1.3 m spacing. Certified infills include Hammerglass and ESG Secure glazing and solid steel. A DNADetect forensic alarm is listed on the certificate as an accessory but is not part of the security rating. Where the screen incorporates a doorset, the minimum opening is 0.57 m high x 0.82 m wide, and the structural integrity of a screen sits outside the scope of LPS 1175. Fire performance of the fire rated profiles is certified separately. See our Jansen security doors and LPS 1175 security windows.

Ultimate High Security Curtain Walling 4

Issue 8 D10 (SR4) | Cert 1097v
ProductLPCB refConfigurationsCertified structural opening
Ultimate High Security Curtain Walling 41097v/01Glazed curtain walling, achieving its rating from either the external or the internal face0.646 m to 20.0 m high; width from 0.646 m with no upper limit

Ultimate High Security Curtain Walling is a separate, higher-specification system from the Jansen Façade range. The same family runs from C5 (SR3) to E10 (SR5), so a facade can be specified at D10 with a route to E10 where the threat increases. Panels are glazed only, and structural design of the facade sits outside LPS 1175. See our security curtain walling.

Kraken 4 cantilever sliding gate

Issue 8 D10 (SR4) | Cert 1097r
ProductLPCB refConfigurationsCertified size
Kraken 4 cantilever sliding gate1097r/01Automatic or manual operation0.5 m to 6.0 m high x 3.0 m to 12.0 m wide; minimum free-standing height 2.8 m

Kraken 4 gates below 2.8 m high must be installed within a four-sided structural opening, with a maximum ground gap of 90 mm, flat level ground and foundations offering equivalent attack resistance. Automatic gates are certified with a Surelock McGill electromechanical lock or IGEM maglock, with BFT or AYROS gate motors; manual gates use a Surelock McGill lock with approved cylinders. Any access control must offer at least 30,000 effective codes. See our vehicle access sliding gates and security gates.

Where D10 Is Specified

D10 suits sites where the credible threat is an experienced attacker with power tools, or where the assets or operations inside justify a ten-minute delay. Typical applications include:

The right rating comes from a security risk assessment that weighs the asset value, the likely capability of an attacker and the time a response needs to arrive. In high-risk and critical infrastructure contexts, that assessment is typically informed by NPSA (National Protective Security Authority) guidance. Our technical team can review the assessment and recommend a rating for each opening.

When C5 is enough

For commercial premises, schools, healthcare and retail where the threat is a planned attack with heavy hand tools rather than power tools, C5 (SR3) is the common choice.

Read the C5 / SR3 rating guide

When to step up to E10

If the threat includes high-end 36V tools and a well-resourced attacker, as at critical national infrastructure, government and high-security embassy sites, E10 (SR5) is more appropriate.

Specifying a D10 Product: Checklist

  • Confirm the certificate shows D10 under Issue 8 (both the letter and the number) and check the listing on Red Book Live
  • Check the opening size falls within the certified structural opening, and note that the Jansen Façade D10 doorset is certified outward opening only
  • Use only the locking systems listed on the certificate, including the minimum number of maglocks and the extra maglocks needed on leaves over 3 m
  • Confirm the glazing and infill panels are within the certified options for that product
  • Detail the fixings and substrate, as the frame to structure connection sits outside the certificate
  • For screens and curtain walling, design the structural performance separately, as it is outside the scope of LPS 1175
  • For Kraken 4 gates, allow for the 2.8 m minimum free-standing height and specify access control with at least 30,000 effective codes
  • For maglocked doorsets and gates, plan an uninterrupted power supply if the rating must hold during a mains failure
  • Remember that resistance of access control systems to non-mechanical attack is outside the scope of LPS 1175

Frequently Asked Questions: LPS 1175 D10 and SR4

Is LPS 1175 D10 the same as SR4?

D10 is the Issue 8 classification commonly compared with SR4: both describe an experienced attack held off for at least ten minutes. Premier Security's D10 products are certified under Issue 8, so they carry D10 on their certificates and are often described as D10 (SR4). If a specification insists on Issue 7 SR4, confirm with the specifier that an Issue 8 D10 product is acceptable.

What tools are used to test a D10 product?

The Category D tool set: everything in Categories A to C (hand tools, bolt cutters, a cordless drill, an axe, a crowbar, a lump hammer and a gas torch) plus 18V cordless disc grinders, reciprocating saws, jigsaws, circular saws and sledgehammers. Testers attack the locked product and must not create a 400 mm x 225 mm opening within ten minutes of working time.

Is D10 the same as D5?

No. Both use the Category D tool set, but a D5 product only has to resist for five minutes, while D10 requires ten. Always check both the letter and the number on the certificate, because a D5 product does not meet a D10 specification.

Which Premier Security products are certified to D10?

The Jansen Façade D10 Curtain Walling Doorset, Screen and Fixed Window (certificates 1097j, 1097k and 1097m), Ultimate High Security Curtain Walling 4 (1097v) and Kraken 4 cantilever sliding gates (1097r), all certified to LPS 1175 Issue 8 D10.

Can a glazed door be certified to D10?

Yes. The Jansen Façade D10 Curtain Walling Doorset is certified with glazed infills including Hammerglass and ESG Secure, in single leaf openings up to 6.07 m high and double leaf openings up to 3.28 m wide. It is certified outward opening only, with the maglock and bolt configuration set out on the certificate.

Is D10 the right rating for a data centre?

D10 (SR4) is a common choice for data centre perimeters, entrances and secure halls, but the rating should come from the site's risk assessment and any client or insurer requirement. Higher-risk facilities may need E10 (SR5) on critical openings. Our team can review the assessment and recommend a rating for each opening.

When should I specify E10 instead of D10?

When the risk assessment points to a sophisticated, well-resourced attacker with high-end 36V cordless tools, or when the site is critical national infrastructure, a government building or a high-security embassy. E10 (SR5) keeps the ten-minute delay but tests against a more powerful tool set.
